SCOPOLI’S SHEARWATER

Main characteristics:

  • Medium size.
  • Very long wings. Its flight alternates glides at sea level with wingbeats.
  • Grey on the dorsal side, whitish on the ventral side and grey on the flanks.
  • Pink-yellow beak with a dark tip.
Conservation status:

Least concern (UICN)

SIZE: Length 45-52 cm; Wingspan 112-122 cm.

IDENTIFICATION: Similar size to the black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus). Its main characteristics are its narrow and long wings, always slightly bent. It performs long glides during the flight intercut by three or four flexible and slow wingbeats. The tips of the wings seem to be blunt. The coloration pattern shows a dark grey colour on the dorsal side and a whitish ventral side, with grey flanks, breast, neck and head. Yellow to pale pink bill, darker at the tip.
