04/20/2013 – Start of the Fin Whale Project
After being approved by the Biodiversity and Protection of Animals division of the Departament of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing, Food and the Environment of the Catalan Government, Associació Cetàcea has initiated the Fin Whale Project, which will allow us to study the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) of the Mediterranean off the Catalan coast. The study is focused on an area between the villages of Castelldefels and Segur de Calafell up to 15 miles off the coast.
The fin whale project was begun after seeing that several fin whale sightings have been documented in the area. With this project, Associació Cetàca wants to contribute to expand knowledge about the fin whale of the Mediterranean. Through geographical, environmental, biological and ecological data collection, the project wants to investigate at which time of the year this baleen whale can be found off the Catalan coast and what it is doing in this region.
The study will be completed during the spring, conducting sighting surveys using recreational vessels, allowing us to fully cover the study area.
